W123 valve clearance adjustment — tappet noise
Valve clearances require periodic adjustment on W123 engines. Excessive clearance causes tappet noise while insufficient clearance causes valve burning.
Ticking or tapping from top of engine especially on cold start. Noise may reduce when warm.
Normal wear. Incorrect clearance from previous adjustment. Worn camshaft lobes.
Check clearances with engine cold. Compare to specification: OM615/616 intake 0.10mm exhaust 0.20mm.
Adjust all clearances to specification. Replace valve cover gasket when refitting.
